Affordable housing in Vancouver is needed for everyone from single people through families - and for people at all earning levels (think this town will retain the new doctors, engineers, etc. it needs when the best they can achieve is a 1200 sqft unit for $1mil and every other place offers much more?). Look across the last 40-50 years. Has there ever been a time when a place that small required such a big chunk of a typical income? I've not seen it in any data I've looked at. Yes, many are too materialistic and unrealistic and ungrateful. But let's not pretend that Vancouver doesn't have serious housing problems that are rooted in circumstances that have arisen in the last decade (and the last 5 years in particular). Pushing some shiny space pod in a town overrun with tiny, rotting condos is not the solution this region needs.

Point being missed: Vancouver has a dearth of rental or affordable ownership options for anyone needing 3 or more bedrooms (i.e. families!). Meanwhile, NIMBY influence keeps City Hall from passing much-needed laws to rezone parts of the East and West Side for things like larger townhouses. The vitriol stems from the fact that things like the units presented in this article are being presented as a solution to what's hurting this town. It doesn't need more small condos (for rent or owning).
